Did you know sunlight
is an essential part of a tortoise’s diet? It truly is a non-negotiable nutrient. While it’s not food in the traditional sense, sunlight plays a critical metabolic role that makes it arguably the most important “ingredient” in a tortoise’s diet.
Here’s why:
• Vitamin D3 Production
Tortoises rely on UVB rays from sunlight to produce vitamin D3 in their skin. This vitamin is vital for calcium absorption, which supports strong bones and healthy shell growth.
• Preventing Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD)
Without enough sunlight, tortoises can’t metabolize calcium properly, leading to MBD—a painful and often irreversible condition that causes shell deformities, bowed legs, and even organ failure.
• Regulating Body Temperature
As ectotherms, tortoises use sunlight to warm up and activate their metabolism. Without it, they become sluggish, struggle to digest food, and may stop eating altogether.
• Supporting Circadian Rhythms
Natural light helps regulate their sleep-wake cycles and daily activity. A tortoise deprived of sunlight may become lethargic, disoriented, and lose appetite.
• Mood and Energy Boost
Just like us, tortoises seem to thrive emotionally with regular sun exposure. It boosts their energy levels and encourages natural behaviors like basking, exploring, and feeding.
So what happens without sunlight?
Even with a perfect diet rich in calcium, a tortoise cannot absorb it without vitamin D3. Even if you give your tortoise powdered supplements! Supplements are often ineffective without UVB exposure. That’s why sunlight—or a high-quality UVB lamp—is considered as essential as food and water.
FYI- The important nutrients from sunlight cannot be absorbed through windows. So if your tortoises are inside or in an area outside that does not get sufficient sunlight for several hours a day you NEED to have UVB lights.
Sunlight deficiencies develop over time. It’s not something you notice right away, but once you see the symptoms it is difficult to correct. We have taken in lots of tortoises with severe symptoms of sunlight deficiencies and most are actively dying by the time their owners seek help.
If you love what we do and would like to help us continue to be able to provide a safe space for tortoises to retire, you can sponsor a tortoise at the rescue. It’s easy. A sponsorship of ANY amount can be sent using
