Six weeks ago we took a call from Sumter about a tiny quail found in the caller’s yard. He thought it was a quail and based on the caller’s description and the circumstances of how it was found, we assumed it would be a quail. We had a transport already heading to a rescue permitted for quail later that afternoon, so our plan was to intercept it from the caller and send it with the transport.
But no.
Once we had it in our hands, we knew it was not like any quail we’d ever had before.
So we tended to it day and night. It sat with us while we worked. While we fed countless baby squirrels. While we cleaned. It had constant human companionship at the rescue.
And as the weeks went on…well, folks at the rescue were either team chicken or team quail; despite it growing far larger than any quail we’ve ever seen.
It was a daily debate. Even when it started showing definite signs it is a chicken the team quail folks stood their ground.
Which is what led to the “Species Reveal” video we shared. It was a lot of fun to make.
We think it is a Welsummer mix. It is a hen. She already has chicken friends, but she is still an office chicken for a few more weeks. Then we will introduce her to a flock.
We absolutely love chickens and domesticated turkeys. We rescue about 20 each year when we have space and budget.
We are so thankful to the caller for choosing us to care for her. She has brought an immense amount of pleasure to all of us.
